OPEC, or the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, was established in 1960 by five states: Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela. The primary intention of OPEC was to establish a cartel-like arrangement among the main oil producing countries to maintain a price structure that would reflect the interests of its member states, rather than of the oil companies, which had been able to largely dictate both price and production levels.
The OPEC is an intergovernmental organization created at the Baghdad Conference in 1960, which gathers 12 countries. The members of OPEC are countries in which 30% at least of the goods exportations are made by petroleum and gas. Their economy is highly dependant on the evolution of petroleum prices.
